Kimi Antonelli has revealed that Mercedes is allowing him and George Russell to race each other freely in the 2026 Formula 1 title battle. However, the Brackley-based team has also introduced strict rules to prevent the internal rivalry from damaging the team’s championship campaign.

Mercedes has dominated the opening phase of the 2026 season after winning all four grands prix so far. Three of those victories have gone to Antonelli, who currently leads the drivers’ championship by 20 points over Russell.

That dominance has immediately created the possibility of a major internal title fight at Mercedes, with both drivers now holding realistic ambitions of securing their first Formula 1 world championship. The situation has already drawn comparisons to the intense rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg from 2014 to 2016.

Antonelli explained that Mercedes made its expectations very clear from the opening race of the season in Australia. The team continues to permit direct racing between its drivers, but only under conditions of mutual respect and controlled aggression.

“The team was very clear with us since the first race in Australia. They said we can race each other, but obviously with respect and without trying to do any stupid things between each other,” Antonelli said.

Mercedes already has extensive experience managing internal championship battles after the Hamilton-Rosberg rivalry repeatedly produced controversial incidents on track. One of the most famous moments came at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix when both Mercedes drivers collided on the opening lap and eliminated each other from the race.

Antonelli insisted both he and Russell fully understand the responsibility that comes with fighting for the championship inside the same team. According to the Italian driver, Mercedes wants both drivers to receive equal opportunities throughout the season without introducing a clear number-one driver policy.

“At the end of the day, we all want to win and be the best, but we also want the best for the team. We know we can race each other, but we have to keep it clean and respectful,” Antonelli added.

With Mercedes currently setting the benchmark performance level under Formula 1’s new 2026 regulations, the internal dynamic between Antonelli and Russell is expected to become one of the defining factors in this year’s championship fight. If Mercedes continues its current dominance, the rivalry could develop into one of Formula 1’s biggest title battles in recent years.
