Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Kimi Antonelli and the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team have come under early-season scrutiny in the 2026 Formula 1 campaign, as the title fight is increasingly projected to become an internal battle with team-mate George Russell.
Mercedes has opened the new regulatory era with a clear performance advantage, securing one victory apiece through its two drivers across the opening rounds. The Brackley-based squad’s technical superiority over rival teams has led to growing expectations that the championship could be decided solely between its own entries, intensifying focus on intra-team dynamics.
Former IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe has questioned whether Antonelli possesses the necessary characteristics to engage in a ruthless title fight against Russell. His assessment centres on the Italian’s limited experience and psychological readiness, given he is still in the early phase of his Formula 1 career at just 19 years old.

The view aligns with former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer, who stated that Russell currently holds the “upper hand” in the title battle. Palmer also suggested that the British driver is unlikely to adopt a conservative or accommodating approach when competing directly against his team-mate.
"It takes two to tango," Hinchcliffe said on the F1 Nation podcast.
"I don’t think at 19, still in his second year, and under the microscope, he truly believes he can step up to that level just yet."
"I haven’t seen that ruthless edge in him that we saw in George during his junior career."
"And even if it’s there, attacking George Russell within the same team is a risky situation. I just don’t think he has that in him right now."
Despite these concerns, Antonelli has delivered competitive performances in the opening rounds, underlining his potential. However, a championship battle at this level requires more than raw pace, demanding decisive racecraft, strategic assertiveness, and the ability to manage sustained psychological pressure across a full season.
With Mercedes expected to maintain its competitive edge in the upcoming races, attention will increasingly shift to how the internal rivalry evolves. Whether Antonelli can rapidly develop into a genuine challenger, or whether Russell’s experience will prove decisive, remains a central question shaping the 2026 title narrative.
The unfolding dynamic is set to become one of the defining storylines of the season, with each subsequent round providing further clarity on the balance of power within Mercedes as the championship fight intensifies.
