Kimi Antonelli secured a brilliant pole position at the United States Grand Prix qualifying session at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. This breakthrough performance marks his first pole since the summer break and highlights Mercedes' relentless efforts to tame and optimize their fast yet complex Formula 1 car upgrades.
Dealing with worsening gusty conditions throughout Q3, nailing the very first flying lap proved to be decisive. Antonelli fended off strong challenges from Red Bull Racing duo Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, who settled for second and third respectively, while Ferrari slipped back into fourth and fifth after showing strong early promise.
The pole position serves as a direct reward for the Silver Arrows' painstaking work to extract performance from their major Malaysia upgrade package. While the updates undeniably made the W17 faster, they also introduced significant setup headaches. After a tricky start in the opening practice session in Austin, the engineering crew steadily chipped away at the balance, supported by a new front wing design.

"I'm happy because we've been working really hard on this package, and we're still trying to understand it fully," said Antonelli after denying Verstappen a hat-trick of poles. "Since Singapore, we've taken a big step further, and now we've just got to keep working on it, keep understanding. But it's a good result for the team because they've done a tremendous job on bringing this package. Finally, we're seeing the results."
The 20-year-old Italian also emphasized his clean execution during the high-pressure shootout. "It was surprising, but also one of the biggest achievements for me today is that I didn't do track limits! That also made our life a little bit easier. I didn't put myself in a difficult situation, and we were able to just progress throughout the session and build from there," he explained.
Heading into Sunday's race, Antonelli faces a remote yet feasible mathematical opportunity to clinch his maiden Formula 1 world championship in Texas. To seal the title, he needs to win the grand prix with specific lower finishes from his closest rivals. Starting from the optimal spot on the grid, the young championship leader remains focused purely on executing a clean race and enjoying the intense atmosphere.
