MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Jorge Martin of Aprilia Racing has been handed a three-place grid penalty following an incident during Friday’s practice at the 2026 Spanish MotoGP in Jerez.
Arriving at Jerez second in the championship standings behind team-mate Marco Bezzecchi, Martin began the weekend by finishing 10th in FP1. However, his Friday running was disrupted by multiple incidents, starting with a crash after the chequered flag when he lost the front of his RS-GP on his way to practice starts.
The 2024 MotoGP world champion then suffered another fall during the afternoon Practice session, this time at the final corner. Despite these setbacks, he recovered to secure ninth place, ensuring direct progression to Qualifying 2.

Following the session, the FIM Stewards reviewed an incident involving Martin and Alex Marquez. Martin was deemed to have ridden slowly on the racing line in the closing stages of the session, impeding Marquez through Turns 3 and 4.
As a result, Martin has been issued a three-place grid penalty for the grand prix. The sanction applies only to Sunday’s main race and will not affect Saturday’s Sprint race.
This marks Martin’s first offence of the 2026 season, but the penalty carries strategic implications given the competitiveness at the front of the field. Starting further back on the grid increases the importance of race execution, overtaking efficiency, and tyre management.
Despite the penalty, Martin remains in a competitive position after qualifying for Q2, leaving open the possibility of limiting the impact of the sanction depending on his final qualifying performance.
