Jorge Martin admitted he was "out of control" on his Aprilia during the MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix due to arm pump, and now faces a tough decision: surgery or tough it out. Arm pump, or chronic exertional compartment syndrome, is a rider's nightmare. The intense pain and swelling in the forearm severely hampers grip and control. "I had a big issue with arm pump," Martin said. "It's a pity. I think we lost a big opportunity today. I was feeling really good, started great, and even took the lead. But then I started to have issues with braking, then opening the throttle, and every lap was worse. At the end, I couldn't do anything; I was completely out of control of the bike."
The Misano race was a bitter pill for Martin. He looked strong early, overtaking Marquez and pulling away. But the arm pump struck, and his performance plummeted. Instead of fighting for victory, he limped home fifth. Now, Marquez has drawn level on points, intensifying the title battle.
Martin is determined not to let this opportunity slip. "I don't want to lose this opportunity," he stated. "I feel ready to fight for the championship, today I was ready to fight for the win. So this is something that cannot help me. But we need to check. I feel I have the speed, the bike, the team; I have everything, nothing is missing. But now I have this question mark about my arm. I think Austria won't be an issue, but I don't know."
Surgery is a complex decision. The MotoGP calendar is relentless, with back-to-back races in Austria, Aragon, and Misano. If Martin opts for surgery, he'll miss at least one race, potentially derailing his title hopes. If he postpones, the risk of arm pump recurring could cost him even more. Aprilia and his doctors will play a crucial role in determining the best course.
Arm pump is typically caused by pressure in the forearm muscles during riding, especially on tracks with many right-hand corners or heavy braking. Fasciotomy surgery relieves the pressure by opening the muscle sheath. Recovery takes weeks, depending on severity. Martin had surgery in 2019 and returned competitively.
With the season far from over, Martin's decision will heavily influence the championship dynamics. If he misses races, Marquez could pull away. If he races, the risk of underperformance remains. One thing is clear: the 2026 MotoGP title fight is heating up, and all eyes are on Jorge Martin and his left arm.
