Aprilia Racing star Jorge Martin has confessed that he was on the verge of abandoning his trip to the Lusail International Circuit as late as last Tuesday due to the severe physical toll of his recent crash. The reigning world champion suffered a fracture to his right wrist during a high-speed incident in the sprint race at Phillip Island, forcing him to miss the entire race weekend in Malaysia. The mounting physical struggles made his travel plans a subject of intense doubt right up until the final days before the race weekend.

Despite enduring excruciating pain throughout the Qatar Grand Prix weekend, the Spanish rider delivered a heroic performance by securing a remarkable third place in the sprint race and battling through to finish seventh in the main grand prix. That crucial points haul kept his mathematical title hopes alive heading into the penultimate round at Portimao, though he still faces a steep 60-point deficit to championship leader Marc Marquez with only two races remaining on the 2026 calendar.

Reflecting on his performance during Sunday's main race, Martin admitted that his physical limitations severely hampered his pace during the final laps. He believes that a stronger grid position than his 11th-place qualification could have easily propelled him into a direct fight for the podium or the top five. The intense physical demands of heavy braking at Lusail tested his endurance to the absolute limit, forcing him to dig deep into his mental reserves to complete the race distance.

Detailing his mid-race mental battle, the Aprilia rider explained how he nearly gave up before pushing through the pain barrier. "After twelve or thirteen laps I started to feel like I was going to give up, in terms of pace, and relax a bit," he stated. "But I saw I was even catching the riders ahead, so I told myself that I could not give up and had to push for the remaining minutes before resting for a week."

Looking ahead to the final stretch of the season, Martin insisted that retaining the championship crown has taken a backseat to achieving full physical recovery. His primary goal for the remaining rounds in Portugal and Valencia is simply to reach 100 percent fitness and enjoy competitive battles on his machine without carrying the heavy psychological burden of the championship standings.
