Honda has confirmed that Joan Mir will sit out the first two races of MotoGP's Asian tour in Japan and Indonesia as he continues to battle health problems.
Mir missed last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix due to illness, having complained of being at only "50 per cent" of his maximum energy levels during the San Marino Grand Prix a week earlier. Now, the Spanish rider will also be absent from the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi on 2-4 October and the Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika.
MotoGP chief medical officer Angel Charte explained: "Joan Mir has been experiencing a variety of symptoms impacting his energy and performance for several months with a recent increase in severity, the cause is still unconfirmed at this time. Due to their persistence and severity, Mir has been undergoing a series of tests at the Dexeus University Hospital with the aim of reaching a definitive diagnosis. Due to the symptoms, the medical advice is to observe strict rest and undergo various treatments for the next 15 days. Consequently, I have advised him against participating in the Japanese and Indonesian Grands Prix. His condition will continue to be closely monitored by my team."
In Austria, Mir was replaced by Takaaki Nakagami, who is set to wildcard at Motegi. The Japanese rider had been testing Honda's 1,000cc MotoGP bike at the Japanese track ahead of what will be the final wildcard in the premier class, as they will be banned from 2027. It remains to be seen whether Nakagami will fill in for Mir again.
Honda has two other potential replacements: Aleix Espargaro and Cal Crutchlow. Espargaro was injured earlier in the year after a crash while testing at Sepang but was recently back on track at Mugello. Crutchlow has raced multiple times this year aboard the RC213V for LCR Honda while Johann Zarco was out injured. Zarco's return saw Crutchlow return to the sidelines, and the British rider made it clear that his decision to race was influenced by his bond with the LCR team and its owner Lucio Cecchinello. However, this replacement would be for the Honda HRC team.
Mir's absence is a blow for Honda, who are striving to improve the performance of the RC213V. The Spaniard's focus is now on recovery, and fans will be hoping to see him back on track soon.
