Joan Mir will miss this weekend’s Austrian MotoGP at the Red Bull Ring after medical checks revealed altered blood parameters requiring further investigation. The Honda HRC rider retired on lap 6 of Sunday’s Misano Grand Prix and immediately travelled to Barcelona for tests.
The decision comes as a blow to Mir, who has been striving to find form on the RC213V. Symptoms shown in Italy prompted his medical team to recommend withdrawal. "Due to the symptoms already shown in Italy and without a clear diagnosis, Mir’s medical team have recommended he focus on his recovery and withdraw from the Austrian GP," an HRC statement read.
In his place, HRC test rider Takaaki Nakagami will partner Luca Marini in the Honda HRC Castrol garage. Fresh from a test at Mugello, Nakagami will jump straight onto the RC213V at Spielberg. His presence is not just a stopgap; it’s a valuable opportunity for HRC to continue developing the 1,000cc machine.
Interestingly, Nakagami was already scheduled for Monday’s post-race test. This substitution allows HRC to gather more data and further prepare for his wildcard at the Japanese GP. It’s a crucial moment for Nakagami to prove his worth on a bike that is still a work in progress.
For Mir, this break is a chance to rest and undergo further tests. The #36 rider has yet to comment, but he is expected to recover soon. Meanwhile, Marini will lead Honda’s charge at the Red Bull Ring with additional data support from Nakagami.
The Red Bull Ring demands engine power and braking stability. Without Mir, Honda’s development burden falls on Marini and Nakagami. However, HRC sees this as an opportunity to accelerate evaluation of new components for the rest of the season.
This decision also reminds us that rider health is paramount. Mir has suffered serious injuries before, and his team is taking no unnecessary risks. With a packed calendar, adequate recovery is key for long-term performance.
For now, Honda’s focus shifts to Spielberg. Can Nakagami spring a surprise? Or will Marini deliver consistency? Either way, Mir’s absence marks a new chapter in HRC’s quest to return to MotoGP glory.
