Joan Mir has been ruled out of the Austrian Grand Prix after blood tests revealed abnormal parameters, his Honda team confirmed. The Spanish rider left Misano early due to symptoms of fatigue and loss of strength and will now rest and undergo further testing.
The decision was made on medical advice, though no clear diagnosis has been established. Honda stated that checks in Barcelona after Misano "revealed altered parameters in the bloodwork, which require further investigation and testing." Mir did not travel to Austria and will miss the race at the Red Bull Ring.
While the entry could have been left vacant given the short turnaround between Misano and Austria, Honda has opted to field test rider Takaaki Nakagami. This will be Nakagami's first MotoGP round of the season, having been busy with development work on the 850cc prototype.
Nakagami recently tested the 850cc prototype at Mugello ahead of the Austrian GP. He will also participate in the collective Pirelli/850cc test on Monday after the race, before racing the current 1000cc bike as a wildcard at Motegi, his home round, in early October.
For Mir, this is a significant setback in an already challenging season. He is set to switch to the Gresini Ducati team on a two-year deal starting in 2027, but his immediate focus is on recovery. Honda says Mir is "targeting a return to health" for Motegi.
Mir's absence opens an opportunity for Nakagami to showcase his speed on the RC213V. While not an ideal situation, it could serve as a reminder of his capabilities, especially as he remains involved in Honda's long-term project.
