Former Ferrari grand prix winner Jean Alesi has shared a compelling perspective regarding the Maranello squad's ongoing development trajectory in the 2026 Formula 1 season. While power unit performance deficits have frequently dominated technical discussions, Alesi argues that the Italian outfit must address broader engineering hurdles to truly unlock maximum competitiveness.
Throughout recent rounds, Charles Leclerc has consistently knocked on the door of victory, securing strong runner-up finishes in both Singapore and the United States, albeit trailing behind pace-setters such as Max Verstappen. The latest aerodynamic upgrade package introduced on the SF-26 in Austin yielded highly encouraging telemetry, granting both Leclerc and his teammate enhanced race pace compared to their qualifying struggles.
Despite ongoing concerns regarding straight-line speed deficiencies stemming from the power unit, Alesi insists that the team’s shortcomings extend far beyond engine output alone, pointing directly to aerodynamic drag coefficients as a decisive factor in top-end speed.

“Non sono convinto che i problemi della Ferrari siano dovuti solo al motore,” noted Alesi in his weekly column, emphasizing that reducing aerodynamic resistance remains vital for achieving competitive straight-line velocity.
Looking ahead toward the final stretch of the championship, Alesi remains optimistic about Ferrari mounting a strong late-season charge to close the gap on Mercedes within the constructors' standings, setting the stage for an intense conclusion to the racing year.
