Alpine F1 Team is reportedly preparing to announce the signing of Jason Somerville after the engineer officially departed the FIA this week.
Somerville spent the last four years serving as the FIA’s head of aerodynamics and played a major role in shaping Formula 1’s latest generation of technical regulations.
The departure was confirmed directly by Somerville through his personal LinkedIn account on May 14, marking his final day with motorsport’s governing body.

“Last day with the FIA today. Massive thanks to all my FIA colleagues, technical partners, FOM, and the Formula 1 teams who made the last four years fascinating, challenging, and enjoyable,” Somerville wrote.
According to RacingNews365, Somerville’s next move will be joining Alpine in a significant role within the Enstone-based team’s technical management structure.
An official announcement from Alpine is expected soon and could arrive as early as this week.
Before joining the FIA, Somerville also worked directly for Formula One Management as head of aerodynamics for almost five years.
His Formula 1 engineering career previously included a major role with Williams Racing, where he served as head of aerodynamics for nearly six years until 2017.
Somerville also held technical positions with Lotus and Toyota before becoming one of the FIA’s most influential aerodynamic specialists.
His arrival represents another important step in Alpine’s effort to strengthen its 2026 Formula 1 project after enduring a difficult 2025 campaign.
The French manufacturer shifted development focus toward the new 2026 regulations early last season and has already shown significant progress during the opening phase of the current championship.
Alpine has already surpassed its entire 2025 points tally after only four rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season.
