James Wharton will officially return to Trident for the 2027 Formula 2 season, after completing his final year with Prema in Formula 3. The announcement marks a strategic move for the Australian driver, who previously raced for the Milan-based team in 2025 at Lusail. Wharton thus becomes part of Trident's driver lineup overhaul, which has also secured Freddie Slater, the F3 runner-up, for the upcoming season.
The switch is a direct result of Wharton's consistent performances in junior categories. Over the past two years in F3, he claimed two wins and four podiums, despite fierce competition on the grid. His achievements convinced Trident to offer him a full-time seat, especially after he showed rapid adaptation during his F2 debut with the same team in 2025. This move also signals the end of Wharton's collaboration with Prema, the team that nurtured him in Formula Regional Europe.
“I can't put into words what this opportunity means to me for 2027,” Wharton said in an official statement. “To be able to return to TRIDENT after racing with them in 2025 is something truly special. We worked very well together; it's a prestigious team that has done an excellent job in recent seasons. I can't wait to join the team and continue working hard over the winter, to arrive in 2027 in the best possible shape. A huge thank you to Giacomo and Maurizio for giving me the opportunity to drive their car and be part of the team. I can never thank TRIDENT enough: I'm really looking forward to starting this new chapter in my career.”
Positive feedback also came from Giacomo Ricci, Trident's Team Manager. “We are very pleased to announce that James Wharton will race in the 2027 FIA Formula 2 Championship with Trident Motorsport. We got to know him at the end of 2025, when he made his F2 debut with us, and since then we have continued to closely monitor his progress. James has demonstrated speed, talent, and great determination. The season just ended allowed him to mature further, and we are confident that the work we will do together will help him take an important step forward.”
For Trident, signing Wharton is part of a long-term strategy to return to the top of F2. The Milan-based team is known for producing young drivers, and the Wharton-Slater combination is expected to provide both technical and mental impetus. Meanwhile, for Wharton, this is a golden opportunity to prove himself at a higher level after honing his skills in F3. His one-race experience at Lusail in 2025 proved valuable, even though he did not score points at the time.
With this confirmation, the F2 driver market for 2027 is heating up. Several other teams are expected to announce their lineups soon, especially towards the end of the 2026 season. Wharton still has the remainder of the F3 season with Prema, and he is expected to finish his campaign there with maximum results before focusing fully on F2. This move also signals that Trident is serious about restoring its former glory on track.
