Extreme weather conditions at Phillip Island ultimately forced the cancellation of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix main race after severely reduced visibility and grounded medical helicopters thwarted all efforts to get the race underway. This bitter twist of fate abruptly halted Jack Miller's emotional home weekend, where he was primed to start fifth on the grid.
Before the cancellation was made official, MotoGP officials sent riders out for a commemorative lap to acknowledge the resilient fans who braved the torrential elements. Miller, outfitted in a special green and gold livery for his final premier-class appearance on home soil, used the opportunity to ride near the grass embankments and salute the grandstands.
"This is not good," Miller said regarding the situation. "You guys have sat through some terrible weather today and I'm sorry for that. At least we got out on track this year, but this is a tough pill to swallow." The Pramac rider had openly confessed his hopes for rain to level the playing field against formidable Ducati and Aprilia machines.

"I was praying for rain all weekend and we got the rain, but obviously we weren't organised enough to get the racing going," Miller added. "It's a tough one. You guys deserve better. Honestly. All of you have done a fantastic job turning out for Phillip Island. Sitting through traffic, sitting through awful weather. You guys are amazing, so thank you very much."
The cancellation meant several special liveries never saw competitive action, denying Moto3 star Joel Kelso the chance to convert his third-place grid slot. Pole-sitter Marc Marquez also shared his heartfelt sympathies with the spectators who packed the historic seaside venue for what proved to be a heartbreaking weekend finale.
"Yeah of course I feel sad for all the fans at Phillip Island because Phillip Island didn't deserve its last race being cancelled," Marquez stated. "The conditions were acceptable, but unlucky the medical helicopter was not ready to fly. It was for safety reasons. We were ready as riders to race but today we couldn't. Thank you for supporting MotoGP."
