Imola is knocking on Formula 1's door once again. The legendary Italian circuit has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Abu Dhabi as the host of the 2026 season finale, should the situation in the Middle East force a calendar change. The news comes after intense discussions between Imola officials, Liberty Media, and Formula 1, though no official decision has been announced.
According to information gathered, the race at Imola would take place on the weekend of December 6, with a start time of 12:00 local. The timing is deliberate: temperatures in Italy in early December are quite low, and sunset occurs around 16:30. An early start aims to ensure a safe and competitive race. Several teams have already begun booking hotels near the circuit in anticipation.
The official name would likely be the Gran Premio del Made in Italy e dell'Emilia-Romagna, similar to the one used in 2025. However, no announcement has been made because one major obstacle remains: Abu Dhabi. According to a report by FormulaPassion, Abu Dhabi has not yet agreed to give up its slot as the season finale. Existing contracts make them reluctant to step aside, especially as they are still actively selling hospitality packages for the Yas Marina event.
This has created a stalemate. Liberty Media and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem are reportedly unwilling to exert too much pressure on Abu Dhabi, given the long-standing relationship. As a result, Imola must wait until Abu Dhabi officially declares it cannot host the race. Only then can F1 announce Imola as the replacement.
For Imola, this opportunity is significant. The circuit, which last hosted a Grand Prix in 2025, has a narrow and challenging layout that always produces exciting racing. If selected, Imola would save the 2026 season from a potential void in the finale. It would also be a breath of fresh air for European fans who could attend without traveling to the Middle East.
Nevertheless, everything depends on the situation in the Middle East. If security conditions are deemed adequate, Abu Dhabi could still host the race as scheduled. But if escalation occurs, Imola is ready as Plan B. Clearly, F1 does not want to risk safety, and Imola is a logical choice.
