Uncertainty currently surrounds the Gresini Ducati squad following a severe right-hand fracture sustained by Fermin Aldeguer during a heavy crash in the main race in Indonesia. The young Spaniard underwent surgery in Barcelona, leaving his participation at the upcoming round on Phillip Island, Australia, from October 23-25, hanging in extreme doubt.
Amidst the growing speculation over a potential stand-in rider, Superbike runner-up Iker Lecuona has emerged as the prime candidate. Having previously stepped in during rounds in Hungary and Great Britain earlier this year, Lecuona proved his capability by securing a stellar seventh-place finish during his outing in Budapest, exceeding initial paddock expectations.
Although he initially remained tight-lipped following Friday practice sessions in Jerez, Lecuona eventually opened up regarding the prospect of a temporary return to the premier class. Speaking to Speedweek, the Spaniard admitted that tackling the iconic Australian circuit aboard a MotoGP machine holds strong appeal, especially after missing out on past opportunities due to pandemic restrictions.

«I have seen the team a couple of times and really enjoyed my time with them. Maybe it would be a good opportunity to ride a MotoGP bike in Australia, which I couldn't do back then because of Covid regulations,» Lecuona explained when discussing the hypothetical call-up.
Despite showing willingness for sporadic substitute appearances, the 26-year-old firmly ruled out pursuing a full-time, permanent return to the MotoGP grid. Citing a more familial and relaxed atmosphere within the WorldSBK paddock alongside precious time spent with his family, Lecuona remains content focusing on his current championship commitments.
