Young racing talent Hugh Hughes has officially confirmed that he will step away from the final Trans Am round at Sandown to shift his full concentration toward preparations for his maiden full-time season in Supercars next year. This strategic decision was made after receiving an intriguing offer from the Erebus Motorsport boss to undertake a dual-racing role during the same high-stakes race weekend.

The Trans Am calendar features back-to-back rounds at the iconic Sandown circuit to conclude the ongoing season. The action commences with the Shannon SpeedSeries running from late October into early November, followed a week later by the prestigious Sandown 500 event on November 6-8. However, Hughes has elected to conclude his campaign after participating in six of the seven scheduled rounds.

Speaking on The Driver’s Seat podcast, the Queenslander detailed how Erebus Motorsport CEO Barry Ryan gave him the strict option to compete in both categories simultaneously. “‘Baz said to me you can do Trans Am and Supercars and I’m like oh hang on Baz, that one might be a little bit exciting,’” Hughes explained with a chuckle when recalling the generous offer extended by his team boss.

Despite having the door wide open for a double-duty weekend, he turned down the chance to ensure absolute focus on his new life as a Supercars driver. Hughes noted that Trans Am had successfully reignited his passion for racing following a difficult and unrewarding Super2 campaign last year, allowing him to showcase his true driving capabilities on a level and budget-friendly playing field.

In the current Trans Am standings, Hughes sits equal fourth alongside Blake Tracey, trailing just two points behind James Moffat in third place. Stepping up to Supercars following a mid-season roster shift has proven his immense potential, highlighted by standout performances in treacherous weather conditions during the Enduro Cup alongside Erebus.
