How Mercedes Cleverly Saved Kimi Antonelli From F1 Singapore GP Penalty

Antonelli took third at the chequered flag

Kimi Antonelli secured a crucial third-place finish at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, keeping him on track to potentially wrap up a historic maiden F1 title in Austin in two weeks. However, the Italian driver's evening on the streets of Singapore could have panned out very differently if not for timely tactical intervention from his team.

During the 62-lap race, the young driver had accumulated four track limits warnings, which under normal sporting regulations would have mandated a five-second time penalty. Having gone wide twice at Turn 2 and once at Turn 19, he had already triggered the black-and-white warning flag. His fourth and potentially punishable infringement occurred during the Mercedes driver's VSC restart at Turn 7, but the Brackley-based squad successfully managed to get the decision overturned.

Viaplay F1 commentator Nelson Valkenburg revealed the behind-the-scenes discussion on The Race F1 Podcast regarding the near-miss penalty. "I had a discussion with the FIA about the fact that he had a warning and then he had another strike; he should have had a five-second penalty," Valkenburg explained. "He triggered one, but they reviewed it, and then they saw that he didn’t. Mercedes asked for a review in that one. This is why the penalty of five seconds never came, because indeed he had the final warning flag and then he triggered one again."

Under F1 Sporting Regulations, track limits violations are strictly penalized unless a driver leaves the circuit with a justifiable reason. The likely defense mounted by the team centered around severe brake and sensor issues that severely hampered car control during the closing stages. Running in dirty air for three-quarters of the race in extreme ambient temperatures caused sensors to fail, leaving the garage without accurate brake temperature telemetry.

"On the restart of the VSC, when I went to brake, nothing happened," the driver admitted after stepping out of the car. "I had really poor stopping, brake power and I almost went into the wall. It was just very tricky out there, and also the pedal was very long." With his championship bid gaining serious momentum, a strong outing alongside teammate George Russell at the upcoming United States Grand Prix could seal the ultimate crown.
