Honda has announced a leadership change in its Formula 1 power unit (PU) development programme. The move, described as a planned transition, will see Yoichiro Fukao, currently deputy leader, step up as Large Project Leader (LPL), succeeding Tetsushi Kakuda effective October 1, 2026.
The decision comes amid a tough season for Honda and Aston Martin, who have struggled to capitalize on the 2026 engine regulations. Fernando Alonso finished only 17th at the Spanish Grand Prix, while Lance Stroll retired with brake issues. Honda introduced an upgraded engine at the Dutch Grand Prix but hasn't seen a significant performance boost.
In a statement, Honda Racing Corporation said the change aims to "further accelerate PU development and ensure a smooth transition to the next generation of engineers." With new regulations in 2026 and more expected from 2027, Honda wants a robust development framework early on.
Fukao, previously head of the software division, brings a fresh perspective. Kakuda, who led the PU project until now, will hand over the reins. Honda insists this is a planned transition, not a panic response to poor results.
On track, Honda and Aston Martin continue to fight. Shintaro Orihara, Honda's trackside general manager, admitted the Spanish GP result was disappointing. "We need to look at the learnings and improvement points for future races," he said. "Over the past three races we've improved the driveability of our spec 2 power unit introduced at the Dutch Grand Prix. By reducing the driveability issue, we can now focus on performance. This weekend we changed some calibrations and saw good signs."
Aston Martin sits 10th in the constructors' championship with three points, ahead of only newcomers Cadillac. The restructuring is hoped to be a turning point, but challenges remain. Honda must ensure the leadership transition doesn't disrupt development momentum, while Aston Martin needs to find missing speed.
With this move, Honda shows long-term commitment to F1. However, on-track results will be the true measure. Will Fukao deliver? Only time will tell, and fans await the Japanese manufacturer's next move.
