The 'Spec 2' power unit's debut at the Dutch GP raised expectations, especially at Aston Martin. Fernando Alonso finished ninth at Zandvoort, his best result of the season, thanks to a combination of the new engine and a champion-level drive. But the enthusiasm was short-lived.
At Monza last weekend, both cars failed to finish. Alonso retired with car damage, while Lance Stroll—who also retired at Zandvoort—pulled over due to a hydraulic issue. Two consecutive disappointments have dampened spirits, but there is now reason to look ahead.
Madrid hosts the Spanish GP for the first time in F1 history, and every team arrives without prior data. For Honda, this is a chance to reset. Orihara sees the track's mix of street and permanent sections as an interesting challenge, particularly in terms of handling and energy management.
“We've had two races since the Spec 2 was introduced, with very different characteristics,” said Orihara. “We'll use that experience in Madrid, focusing on handling and energy management. Overall, I think Madrid will suit our package better, and we'll work hard all weekend to maximize our potential.”
That statement reflects cautious optimism, not just talk. Honda knows they are still behind other manufacturers, but Madrid could be a turning point. With an untested track, adaptability is key, and that's where Honda's experience in energy management might give them an edge.
For Alonso, racing at home always holds special meaning. Despite a tough season, the support of the home crowd and a potentially better-suited package in Madrid could fuel a competitive performance. One thing is certain: Honda arrives determined to prove that Spec 2 is more than just a promise.
