Honda is the only MotoGP manufacturer yet to finalise its 2027 rider line-up. The Japanese manufacturer now faces a tricky situation: it must choose between Diogo Moreira and David Alonso for the second seat in the factory team, while a potential contractual commitment to Alonso could complicate matters.
Honda has secured Fabio Quartararo as a factory rider for 2027, while Johann Zarco is confirmed to stay at LCR Honda. However, who will partner Quartararo remains unknown. According to various sources, David Alonso has been guaranteed a place in the factory team for 2027 in his contract. This agreement is even said to be written into the signed contract.
This creates a dilemma as Moreira has impressed in his debut season. The Brazilian has made it directly into Q2 four times and has collected 64 points so far. Moreira has finished in the top ten five times, with a sixth place at the Hungarian Grand Prix as his best result. That tally means the LCR Honda rider has now scored nearly twice as many points as Joan Mir, who has only 33 points after fourteen rounds.
Moreira reportedly signed a two-year contract with an option for a third year. The 2028 option is linked to a promotion to the factory team in 2027 if certain targets are met in 2026. Given his strong performances, points total, and progress, it is not unthinkable that Moreira has already met those targets.
In the battle to sign Alonso, Honda had to pull out all the stops and act quickly as Ducati was also keen on the Colombian. Honda may have persuaded the current Moto2 rider by promising him a factory seat. That very promise, combined with Moreira's strong showing, now presents Honda with a difficult choice. Based on his MotoGP experience and results, Moreira has firmly put himself forward for promotion, while Alonso reportedly has a contractual claim to the same seat.
Alonso's arrival at Honda was announced on 21 July, but the Japanese manufacturer has yet to clarify how the riders will be distributed between the factory team and LCR Honda. With Quartararo as the new lead rider and Zarco assured of his LCR spot, the remaining puzzle revolves around Alonso and Moreira. Honda will have to decide who will partner Quartararo in the factory team and who will ride for LCR Honda in 2027.
