Honda Faces Fresh Driveability Work with New F1 Engine

Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll encountered significant challenges when they first used Honda's new engine specification at the Dutch Grand Prix. In sprint qualifying at Zandvoort, both Aston Martin drivers struggled to control their cars due to driveability issues, dropping them to the back of the grid.

Honda had planned to introduce the V6 engine development at Zandvoort as part of its mid-season performance strategy. However, changes in combustion characteristics on the new engine made recalibration unavoidable. Alonso even ran off at Turn 1 during SQ1 due to strong engine vibrations, before eventually starting from last place.

"I struggled to brake because the engine kept delivering power," said Alonso. "The SLM mode also didn't work, so I couldn't open the rear wing. The combination made laps very tricky." Stroll, who finished 19th, also admitted fighting with unstable engine behavior, especially in the windy conditions at Zandvoort.

Despite the disappointing weekend outcome, Honda had anticipated these issues. Honda's F1 project leader Shintaro Orihara explained that each new engine specification changes combustion characteristics, which directly impacts engine behavior in corners. "We have to develop driveability again for the spec 2 engine," he told Autosport.

For Fernando Alonso and the team, this is a normal part of the development cycle. The poor sprint qualifying result doesn't necessarily indicate race performance, as the team still has time to analyze data and make adjustments. However, with tight competition in the midfield, every small detail will be crucial.

Honda and Aston Martin must now work extra to ensure the new engine's power potential can be utilized optimally without compromising car stability. If successful, this upgrade could be key to closing the gap to the top teams for the remainder of the season.
