There’s a fresh twist in the ongoing saga surrounding the Australian Auto-Sport Alliance (AASA). The Hi-Tec Oils Super Series, which hit a standstill after its partnership with AASA abruptly ended, is reportedly gearing up for a comeback. This move marks a new chapter as several racing categories have already jumped ship.
As widely known, Hi-Tec Oils previously held promotional rights for the AASA Race Series, but that relationship came to a sudden halt after the Sydney Motorsport Park round in July. The departure of Hi-Tec was followed by broadcast producer AVE, leaving the recent AASA round at Queensland Raceway to run on live streaming only.
The exodus gained momentum when Formula RX-8, the TA2 Muscle Car Series, Legend Cars Australia, and the Australian IRC Racing Series jointly announced their split from AASA on Sunday. This collective decision added to a growing list of categories dissatisfied with AASA’s management direction.

Now, George Gambino, Hi-Tec’s boss, is reportedly working hard to revive the racing series. Plans are in motion to hold a new series at Winton Motor Raceway on September 25-27, under the governance of Motorsport Australia. Interestingly, that date was originally set for an AASA round until a spat between AASA and Winton’s operator, the Benalla Auto Club, put an end to it.
Formula RX-8 has emerged as one of the most enthusiastic supporters of this revival. In an official statement, series director Jackson Rice confirmed they intend to join the reborn Hi-Tec Oils Super Series for the remainder of 2026 and beyond. “Formula RX-8 are ecstatic to announce we will join the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series for the remainder of 2026 and beyond,” Rice said.
“In conjunction with Hi-Tec Oils and Benalla Auto Club, Formula RX-8 is committed to delivering the best value for money single make series in the country, top quality free to air viewing, and an open, engaging pit paddock for all spectators,” he added. Rice emphasized that this decision prioritizes competitors, aligning with Gambino’s shared values in treating racers fairly.
While it’s still unclear how many categories will sign up, the rebirth of the Hi-Tec Oils Super Series brings a breath of fresh air to national racing fans. With support from Motorsport Australia and enthusiasm from various categories, the series has strong potential to become a competitive and entertaining platform once again. The pressing question now is whether AASA can withstand this wave of departures.
