Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Helmut Marko of Red Bull Racing has expressed confidence in the team and Max Verstappen despite a difficult start to the 2026 Formula 1 season.

The campaign has presented immediate challenges for Red Bull, with performance and reliability issues affecting both early rounds. At the Australian Grand Prix, Verstappen was forced to start from P20 after a crash in Q1, before recovering through the field to finish sixth, highlighting both the car’s limitations and the driver’s adaptability.

However, the situation deteriorated further at the Shanghai International Circuit. The RB22 proved difficult to manage, with both Verstappen and his new team-mate Isack Hadjar struggling to extract consistent performance across the weekend.

Rather than competing with front-running teams such as McLaren, Red Bull found itself battling midfield rivals including Haas F1 Team, represented by Oliver Bearman, and Alpine F1 Team with Pierre Gasly. In several phases of the race weekend, Red Bull was unable to outperform these competitors.

The Chinese Grand Prix further exposed the team’s weaknesses. While Isack Hadjar managed to secure eighth place and four points, Verstappen retired due to a coolant leak, reinforcing concerns over reliability and technical stability.

As a result, Red Bull currently sits fifth in the constructors’ standings, a significant departure from its recent dominance. Despite this, Helmut Marko remains confident in the team’s ability to recover.

“Red Bull is known for being able to catch up quickly and effectively, so anything is still possible,” Marko stated.

Impact of Middle East Race Cancellations

A key factor underpinning this optimism is the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, which were scheduled for April. The decision, driven by geopolitical circumstances, has created an unexpected gap in the early-season calendar.

For Red Bull, this interruption provides valuable additional time to analyse performance data and implement technical improvements without the immediate pressure of race weekends.

“The good thing is that the two April races have been cancelled, which gives them even more time,” Marko explained.

This extended development window is particularly significant given the team’s current need to better understand the RB22’s behaviour and optimise its new power unit package. Focus areas are expected to include reliability improvements and enhanced performance consistency across varying circuit conditions.

However, this perspective is not universally shared within the team. Hadjar has previously suggested that reduced track time could limit opportunities to understand the car in real race scenarios. Marko, however, views the situation differently, particularly in light of Red Bull’s current competitiveness.

“If you don’t have a car that scores points at the front, that’s not a disadvantage,” he added.

Development Focus and Season Outlook

With a combination of technical challenges and increased development time, Red Bull now enters a critical phase of the 2026 season. Strategic decisions made during this period will play a decisive role in shaping the team’s competitiveness moving forward.

Max Verstappen remains central to this process, both in terms of extracting performance under difficult conditions and providing detailed technical feedback to guide development.

At the same time, the contribution of Isack Hadjar as part of a new driver line-up is also key in expanding the team’s data pool and refining the car’s setup direction.

Overall, while Red Bull’s start to the 2026 campaign has been challenging, the combination of technical expertise, development capability, and calendar dynamics provides a foundation for internal optimism.

With the enforced break offering a crucial opportunity for reset and refinement, attention now turns to how effectively Red Bull can address its weaknesses and re-establish itself as a front-running contender when the Formula 1 season resumes.
