Helmut Marko Claps Back at Christian Horner Over Max Verstappen Claims
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
A bitter feud has emerged between Christian Horner and Helmut Marko

The underlying tensions within the Formula 1 paddock have resurfaced as Helmut Marko firmly pushed back against a controversial claim made by former Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner. In his new autobiography titled Drive, Horner put forward the bombshell accusation that Marko initially did not want Max Verstappen in the team, suggesting that the driver's father, Jos Verstappen, had to push hard to secure the deal. This explosive revelation immediately drew a sharp response from Marko, who made it clear that the narrative presented in the book is entirely inaccurate.

Speaking to Austrian outlet OE24, the veteran advisor who departed Red Bull at the end of 2025 addressed the situation with a dismissive attitude toward the claims. I am ignoring it as much as possible. Ralf Schumacher handled it very well, Marko stated, referencing the former F1 driver's defense on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast where Horner's statement was labeled an absolute lie. Schumacher pointed out that Marko had actually approached Verstappen when he was just eleven and a half years old, establishing a much earlier connection than what was portrayed in the autobiography.

Marko elaborated on the actual sequence of events that brought the Dutch prodigy into the Red Bull fold, highlighting how their paths crossed during the junior categories. He explained that although initial talks hit a brief standstill due to age, their reunion in Formula 3 ultimately paved the way for an unprecedented success story in motorsport. According to Marko, the progression of events was entirely natural and completely contrasts with the version of history that Horner attempted to establish in his literary work.

Countering the assertions further, Marko shifted the spotlight onto Horner's own initial reservations regarding Verstappen's sudden promotion to the senior Red Bull squad four races into the 2016 season. Recalling the paddock atmosphere at the time, Marko revealed that he had to stand his ground against the Briton in Barcelona because Horner felt the youngster was simply too young and too inexperienced. That gamble paid off spectacularly when Verstappen secured a sensational victory on his debut at the Spanish Grand Prix, rewriting the record books as F1's youngest-ever winner.

The relationship between Marko and Horner deteriorated significantly following the passing of Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz, triggering a prolonged internal power struggle. That backstage friction ultimately culminated in Horner's departure from the leadership role following the British Grand Prix in 2025, closing a two-decade chapter at the helm. The ongoing war of words through memoirs and interviews continues to shed light on the fierce political dynamics that shadowed one of the most dominant eras in modern motorsport.
