Former Formula 1 driver Heikki Kovalainen has shed light on the harsh realities and fundamental goals driving his ongoing tyre development project with Dunlop. Competing in the fiercely contested Italian Rally Championship last season, the Finnish driver acknowledged that despite operating as underdogs, he and his team managed to fight on equal terms with drivers fully capable of winning European Rally Championship rounds.

Speaking in an interview with Rally Plus, Heikki Kovalainen highlighted the exceptional standard of the competition. "In Rome, which also counted as an ERC round, Roberto Dapra won the rally by beating the leading ERC drivers. That shows just how competitive the Italian championship is," he explained regarding the intense paddock environment.

The Finn strongly emphasized that reaching the absolute peak of performance immediately in an entirely unfamiliar environment is practically impossible. Adapting to new special stages requires rigorous mileage and meticulous data gathering. Whenever results fall short of expectations, he uses those moments to ground himself in reality.

"The idea that we could go straight to the front is unrealistic and virtually impossible. When the results have fallen short of expectations and I have been disappointed, I try to remind myself of that. We understand the realities, and from time to time we need to remind ourselves of them," said Heikki Kovalainen, reflecting on the patience required during a developmental phase.

Tackling unfamiliar special stages presents an immense challenge. Comparing his experience to veterans like Andrea Crugnola—who had contested the Sanremo Rally 15 times while it was completely new to the Finn—underlines the steep learning curve involved in modern rallying.

"Experienced drivers like that are both benchmarks for me and rivals I am fighting against," Heikki Kovalainen pointed out. Ultimately, the core objective of the Dunlop programme stretches far beyond immediate podium finishes, focusing heavily on bridging the telemetry and data gap against long-standing competitors like Pirelli.

"That is the most important objective of this programme, and we must keep it in mind at all times," Heikki Kovalainen concluded, noting that the vast data collected from seven rallies will serve as a crucial foundation for the project's next chapter.
