Promising Start Turns Sour
Hamilton began the race on soft tyres and was challenging Lando Norris and Kimi Antonelli in the early stages. However, he exited the second corner in fourth place after Max Verstappen cut the first chicane. The two old rivals' dispute was short-lived as Hamilton quickly realised his brakes were failing.
Verstappen Ordered to Give Position, Hamilton Slows
Verstappen, asked to return the position, had to almost stop to wait for Hamilton, who ran wide and lost six seconds to Norris. The Ferrari driver eventually passed Verstappen, but the brake problem was too severe, and he had to pit after a few laps, ultimately retiring.
Championship Implications
With this result, Hamilton risks losing third place in the drivers' standings to Norris. Ferrari is also likely to lose points to both Mercedes and McLaren. The team's hopes now rest solely on Charles Leclerc, who after 12 laps was fourth, 2 seconds behind Verstappen, but on medium tyres while the Dutchman was on softs.
Hamilton's failure adds to Ferrari's technical woes this season. After the Monza incident, Madrid witnessed another disappointing early exit. Fans will be hoping Leclerc can salvage Ferrari's pride in the remaining races.
