Lewis Hamilton has revealed he has found his "Italian Bono"—a nod to his former Mercedes race engineer Peter Bonnington—in new Ferrari race engineer Carlo Santi. The instant connection is said to be the key to Hamilton's resurgence in 2026 after a difficult debut season with the Scuderia.
Ferrari's decision to replace Riccardo Adami with Carlo Santi ahead of the 2026 season was questioned by many. Adami, who previously worked with Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz, failed to replicate the iconic dynamic Hamilton enjoyed with Bonnington at Mercedes—a partnership that yielded 83 wins and six Drivers' Championships.
Now, Hamilton feels Santi—who was Kimi Raikkonen's race engineer during his 2018 US Grand Prix victory at Austin—is the right man. "He's a bit of an OG; he feels like an older guy who's been around the block and is very calm," Hamilton told media. "You can hear it on the radio, but this is the detail we're able to go into together with our understanding of the engineering side."

Hamilton admitted his relationship with Adami was also good, but it took time to learn each other's needs. "With Bono, it was hit off from the beginning. Mostly, he had a good working relationship with Michael [Schumacher], and I do feel like Carlo is my Italian Bono," he said.
The instant chemistry between Hamilton and Santi has paid massive dividends in 2026, helping Hamilton secure a breakthrough win in Barcelona and hold second place in the championship standings—a resurgence that fans have been eagerly waiting for.
