Hamilton Explains Setup Mistake Costing Singapore GP Pole

Lewis Hamilton had to settle for third on the starting grid for the Singapore Grand Prix after failing to deliver a clean lap during the crucial Q3 shootout. The British world champion looked like a genuine contender for pole position following a stellar performance earlier in the knockout phases.

However, minor setup adjustments made ahead of the final runs proved counterproductive. Tweaking the front wing angle and brake balance pushed the handling characteristics of his Ferrari past the optimal operating window, making the chassis twitchy and unpredictable when it mattered most.

“The car was good: my team, engineers, and mechanics did a fantastic job between sessions. The car was fantastic in Q1 and Q2, but I thought I still had something more to extract, and the only way to get it was to increase the front wing. I think, however, that I took it to the limit, and the car became nervous. None of the laps in Q3 were good, so, honestly, I am grateful to be third,” Hamilton explained regarding his session.

He further emphasized how extraordinarily narrow the performance margin is with current Formula 1 machinery, where a single click of adjustment can completely alter the mechanical and aerodynamic balance.

“I think with our car there is a very fine line between exceeding the limit and not reaching the limit. Finding that equilibrium point is really very difficult. We made two very small changes in Q3, one on the brake balance and one click on the front wing: instead, the car was enormously different. This shows we are fast when we have the right balance. When we miss the balance, those details change everything,” he added.

Securing third place still places Maranello in a strong tactical position with both cars inside the top three for the race start. The Italian outfit will now prepare to challenge polesitter Max Verstappen under the lights of Marina Bay.
