Ahead of the Formula 1 race weekend in Singapore, intense scrutiny was directed at Ferrari's tactical decisions during the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. The Maranello-based squad was considered to have missed a golden opportunity to mount a serious challenge against Max Verstappen when they fitted slick tires to both cars during a restart on a damp track.
That controversial decision sparked heavy debates among fans, as the incorrect tire choice effectively destroyed any realistic chance of fighting for the race win. However, Lewis Hamilton stepped forward to defend the team's strategists when speaking to Sky Sports UK ahead of the next round of the championship.
The seven-time world champion detailed the intricate process behind crucial operational decisions within the garage. He emphasized that choices of that magnitude are never made in isolation, involving multiple key personnel working collectively toward a common goal.

“The strategists give their opinion, then there is that of Frederic Vasseur who is the team principal, that of Matteo Togninalli who is the head of track operations, then there is my race engineer Carlo Santi and of course I also have my say,” the British driver explained.
Although he admitted having an initial instinct that the track was still too wet for slick compounds, Hamilton firmly maintained that motorsport requires absolute unity in both victory and defeat. He also pointed out that their direct competitors suffered identical strategic missteps without facing the same level of public backlash.
“I felt the track was wet, everyone else was instead convinced to fit slicks and in the end I should have listened to my instinct, but it's a team effort, we win and make mistakes together. McLaren made the same mistake and no one put them on trial,” he added.
Reflecting on the overall package of the car, Hamilton remains thoroughly optimistic about the team's prospects for the remainder of the season. He noted that while the team acknowledges a power deficit that they plan to resolve for next year, the overall development of the car continues to move in a positive direction.
