Lewis Hamilton didn't mince words when asked about the swirling speculation linking Christian Horner to Ferrari. When Sky Sports reporter Craig Slater asked if he still believed the team was on the right path under Fred Vasseur, the seven-time world champion replied succinctly: "Yes." That answer came during the 2026 Baku Grand Prix weekend, a paddock buzzing with talk of Horner's recent interview with The Times.
Horner, the long-time Red Bull team principal, is gearing up to promote his new book, Drive. In the interview, he admitted he could comfortably afford never to work again, yet still feels the urge to return to Formula 1. The kicker: he named Ferrari as the one team that could tempt him back into a traditional role, even as an employee. That comment sparked immediate speculation about Vasseur's future at Maranello.
Ferrari and Horner have crossed paths before. In 2010, there were reports of a potential move to lure him from Milton Keynes to Maranello as part of a package with Adrian Newey. But no concrete evidence suggests such a scenario is materializing now. Many see Horner's remarks as part of his book tour rather than a serious signal from Ferrari.
Former F1 driver turned Sky Germany pundit Timo Glock weighed in, saying Horner's comments put Vasseur in an unnecessarily awkward position. "Vasseur has brought Ferrari back to where they are now. He has brought structure and order into the team. To replace him now and start the next wave of upheaval would, strategically speaking, be completely wrong from Ferrari's point of view," Glock said.
Glock's view reflects the reality that Vasseur has built a solid foundation since taking over as team principal. Under his leadership, Ferrari has gradually returned to competitiveness, though still battling against rival teams' dominance. A leadership change during such a crucial period could disrupt the momentum that has been hard to build.
Hamilton, for his part, clearly doesn't want to get caught up in drama that could distract him. The British driver chose to give his full support to Vasseur, showing he sees stability as key to achieving Ferrari's goals. A good relationship between driver and team principal is vital for the challenges ahead.
So far, there's no indication Ferrari is seriously considering replacing Vasseur. The speculation stems mostly from Horner's own comments, conveniently timed with his promotional tour. For fans, this saga is intriguing, but on track, the focus remains on performance and the championship fight.
