Lewis Hamilton has spoken out after a heated radio exchange at the Dutch Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver admitted his sarcastic messages during the race were not "the best version" of himself, while vowing to do better moving forward.
The moment came at Zandvoort when Ferrari delayed its team orders. Hamilton was held up for a significant time behind teammate Charles Leclerc, who was on a different strategy. As a result, his podium chances slipped away.
"I've listened back to some of my radio and TV comments," Hamilton wrote on social media. "In the heat of the moment, frustration can come out, especially when you care as deeply as I do. But that wasn't the best version of me. I take responsibility for that, and I'll be better."
On the radio, Hamilton had said: "Great way of wasting time guys, good job." When frustrated with the lack of pace on old tyres, he added: "Are you using me as a guinea pig or what? How long will you have me stay out?"
The strategy blunder meant Lewis Hamilton finished fourth and dropped to third in the standings. He now trails Kimi Antonelli by 59 points. However, the Brit's fighting spirit remains intact.
"Thank you for sticking with us and with me. We'll keep building, keep pushing and keep fighting," Hamilton wrote. He also stressed his belief in the team's development direction.
On the other side, Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur admitted the outcome could have been different with a quicker decision. Despite that, Hamilton felt the weekend still delivered valuable points and signs of progress for the Italian squad.
"A tough weekend, but we leave with valuable points for the team and signs that we're moving in the right direction," he concluded.
