Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Charles Leclerc is facing one of the most difficult periods of his Ferrari career in 2026 after repeated errors and the characteristics of the SF-26 left him behind Lewis Hamilton. Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer believes the pressure has increased because Hamilton continues to maximise results and now holds a 46-point championship advantage.
Leclerc started the campaign with two podium finishes but has generally been unable to match Hamilton’s consistency. The British driver delivered Ferrari’s only victory of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix, while Leclerc has lost several opportunities through costly mistakes, particularly in qualifying.
Palmer described Leclerc as a generational talent who drives through instinct and feel. However, that aggressive approach has also left him vulnerable to exceeding the limit, with the frequency of his errors becoming more damaging as pressure from the other side of the garage continues to grow.

“Right now he seems to be in the toughest moment of his career,” Palmer wrote in his analysis for F1.com.
Palmer’s technical explanation centres on the behaviour of the SF-26. The Ferrari is described as having a responsive front end while the rear remains mobile and difficult to predict. That balance would normally be expected to suit Leclerc, but his naturally aggressive style is instead believed to provoke more instability.
Hamilton has adopted a calmer approach to the same limitations. That style has allowed the seven-time world champion to reduce excessive movement, preserve consistency and maximise results when Ferrari has not possessed the fastest package.
Leclerc’s difficulties were again visible at the Austrian Grand Prix, where Ferrari endured a challenging weekend overall. Silverstone Circuit may not provide an immediate recovery because its high-speed sections and long straights could again expose the limitations of the SF-26.
Palmer believes Leclerc does not require a fundamental transformation, but a sequence of clean weekends to rebuild confidence. Reducing qualifying errors, controlling the unstable rear of the car and securing the maximum available result will be important before he can return to attacking with his usual intensity.
The Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring is viewed as a more suitable opportunity. Leclerc took pole position there last season, while Ferrari’s 2026 package is considered stronger than its previous car. If he can rebuild momentum before arriving in Budapest, the circuit could provide a route back towards his best form.
Leclerc is now under pressure from two directions: the unpredictable characteristics of the SF-26 and Hamilton’s high standard of championship execution. His response across the next rounds will determine whether he can reduce the 46-point deficit and re-establish himself as Ferrari’s leading reference during the next phase of the 2026 season.
