The Ayrton Senna Circuit in Goiania will undergo another closure after fresh asphalt damage was discovered in the weeks following the 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix. The latest issues have forced circuit officials to schedule additional repair work in June, only a short time after a major refurbishment programme was completed following a problematic MotoGP weekend.
MotoGP's return to Brazil for the first time in more than two decades was expected to be a landmark event for the championship's South American expansion. Instead, the event at the Ayrton Senna Circuit Goiania became dominated by infrastructure concerns that cast doubt on the venue's readiness and the effectiveness of circuit approval procedures.
Heavy rainfall caused flooding issues around the facility during the opening day of track activity. The situation worsened when the Sprint race was delayed due to a sinkhole that appeared on the main straight. Emergency repairs were required before the event could continue safely.

Further complications emerged shortly before the start of the Grand Prix when asphalt deterioration appeared at the Turn 11 and Turn 12 section of the circuit. Race officials shortened the race distance moments before lights out as a precautionary measure. A post-event investigation concluded that the sinkhole was linked to damage within an ageing sewage system affected by severe rainfall, while the asphalt failure was attributed to an incomplete curing process.
Following the MotoGP round, the circuit remained closed for more than a month while repair works were carried out. A regional Porsche Cup event was also postponed as a consequence. Organisers hoped the extensive repairs would resolve the underlying problems before motorsport activity resumed.
However, a Stock Car Brasil event held last week exposed new concerns. According to local reports from O Popular, additional asphalt deterioration developed, particularly around Turn 5. The discovery prompted authorities and circuit management to plan another closure in June to undertake further resurfacing work.
State Secretary for Sports and Leisure Welington Peixoto explained that the repair operation itself only requires a few days. However, he stressed that sufficient curing time is essential to ensure the asphalt reaches its intended durability. He indicated that shortcomings in the previous curing process were responsible for the renewed deterioration.
The Goiania situation has also renewed scrutiny of the circuit homologation procedures overseen by the FIM. Several riders, including Toprak Razgatlioglu, previously supported the idea of conducting official MotoGP tests at new venues before they host championship races. With the Brazilian Grand Prix scheduled to remain on the calendar next season and a new event planned in Argentina, circuit readiness and inspection standards are expected to remain significant discussion points ahead of the next campaign.
