Germany continues to hold its position as the undisputed leader in the Long Track of Nations world championship with ten titles to its name. However, a stark reality reveals that seven of those ten championship trophies were secured during the opening eight years of the competition when the nation boasted a much larger talent pool.
Repeating the difficulties faced last season—where team manager Jorg Tebbe had to step in as an active rider following multiple withdrawals—assembling a competitive squad proved to be an uphill battle once again. Potential top contender Daniel Spiller was sidelined with an injury, while past world champions Erik Riss and Martin Smolinski were unavailable for selection.
Despite the setbacks, Lukas Fienhage delivered an outstanding performance to keep the team fighting near the front. Speaking to Speedweek, national coach Tebbe noted that the squad finished just five points shy of the bronze medal and could easily have made the podium with a bit more luck and a full health roster.
The shrinking pool of elite German riders has directly impacted the national championship, which is now contested by only twelve riders and filled out with B-license competitors. This troubling situation highlights the deep structural challenges currently facing the long-track discipline within the country.
Rebuilding a competitive peak requires a broad foundation of riders who are well-developed in speedway racing skills. The national team must now navigate a transitional gap while waiting for young talents to gain enough experience for international competition.
