F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has confirmed talks are underway to bring back the German GP. The race last ran in 2019, and since then, a serious return has never materialized. Now, with shifting commercial landscapes, there's renewed hope. But is it enough?

Domenicali: Germany an Interesting Market

Domenicali credits the RTL-Sky Germany merger as a catalyst for renewed interest. He believes the German market will differ from the UK or Italy, where Sky dominates broadcasts. "There will be a digital platform or other streamer that will apply for the tender," he said. He also highlighted Audi and Mercedes as key partners based in Germany.

"Germany wants us to think medium-term about returning to the calendar, or even becoming one of the most important markets as 20 years ago," Domenicali stated. However, he stressed this is not a short-term call. That means Hockenheim must be patient, placing immense pressure on a race that hasn't secured its return yet.

The Elephant in the Room: Lack of German Drivers

Here's the crux. To market a product effectively, you need a figurehead. German fans have always had heroes: from Michael Schumacher to Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg. Now, only Nico Hulkenberg remains active, and he's in the twilight of his career. Mick Schumacher failed to stick, and no clear successor exists in Formula 2 or Formula 3.

Without a competitive German driver, enthusiasm could wane. Look at Hungary or Belgium—they thrive because they attract fans from many countries. Germany is different. They have a deep emotional connection with local drivers. Without one, grandstands that once overflowed could empty, marking the start of a slow death.
