Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell continued his strong start to the 2026 Formula 1 season by claiming victory in the Sprint race at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. The Mercedes driver survived an early battle with former team-mate Lewis Hamilton before controlling the race to the finish.

Russell started from the front of the grid but immediately faced pressure from Hamilton during the opening lap. The Ferrari driver briefly took the lead into Turn 9, with the two former Mercedes team-mates exchanging positions several times during the early laps of the race.

Once the opening duel settled, Russell gradually pulled clear at the front. The intense fight early in the race significantly increased Hamilton’s tyre degradation, allowing his team-mate Charles Leclerc to move ahead of him later in the race.

The sprint was also shaped by an incident on the opening lap when Kimi Antonelli collided with Isack Hadjar at Turn 6. The Mercedes driver received a 10-second time penalty, affecting his race despite a strong recovery drive afterward.

A safety car was later deployed after Nico Hulkenberg stopped on the exit of Turn 1. The interruption prompted most of the leading drivers to pit for fresh tyres due to the significant degradation seen throughout the sprint race.

Following the restart with three laps remaining, Russell executed a clean getaway and quickly opened a gap to Leclerc. Hamilton briefly lost position to Lando Norris but reclaimed third place on lap 18 to secure a double podium finish for Ferrari behind the Mercedes winner.

Russell crossed the line first ahead of Leclerc and Hamilton, while Norris and Antonelli completed the top five. Oscar Piastri finished sixth, while reigning world champion Max Verstappen endured a difficult race for Red Bull Racing, finishing ninth after a poor start.

The result strengthens George Russell’s position in the early championship standings as the Chinese Grand Prix weekend continues. With full points still available in Sunday’s main race in Shanghai, the competitive battle between Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren is expected to remain central to the 2026 Formula 1 title fight.
