George Russell has been tipped to keep his Formula 1 title hopes alive after a strong performance in Azerbaijan. Martin Brundle believes Russell’s display in Baku could provide important momentum after the Mercedes driver responded strongly to Kimi Antonelli’s championship advantage.
Russell secured his first grand chelem in Baku and was only denied the top spot in FP3 during the weekend. The performance represented one of his strongest displays of the season after previously struggling to fully gel with the Mercedes W17 while Kimi Antonelli built an 81-point championship advantage through eight Grand Prix victories.
The situation changed during a difficult weekend for Antonelli. The Italian driver crashed in qualifying and started the race from 16th before recovering to fifth. Alongside Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri failing to score points and Pierre Gasly being eliminated after an incident involving Franco Colapinto, the result reduced Antonelli’s championship lead to 66 points.

Brundle believes the pressure created by Antonelli could instead encourage Russell to find another level of performance. He highlighted Russell’s approach in Baku as evidence of the Mercedes driver’s ability to respond to the internal competition and the demands of a title fight.
“I think this generational talent we're now seeing in Kimi Antonelli won't break George at all; it'll be the making of him,” Brundle told Sky Sports F1.
Brundle subsequently suggested that Russell could find “another gear” after his Baku performance. He also highlighted Russell’s mindset before the race, particularly after a Safety Car period erased a lead of more than 10 seconds.
“He was on a mission, wasn't he? The fire in his eyes sitting on the grid was extraordinary,” Brundle said. “It was one of George's most important performances in Formula 1.”
The title battle could also be influenced by Mercedes’ upcoming upgrade package, which the team expects to deliver around three-tenths of a second in performance. Russell previously indicated that a car behaving in a way that better suits his preferences could help him make greater use of the upgrade.
Brundle also pointed to several challenging races later in the calendar that could affect the championship battle. He highlighted the possibility of thunderstorms in Malaysia, the walls in Singapore, unpredictable outcomes in Brazil and the slippery nature of Las Vegas as factors that mean the title fight is not yet settled.
