Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell began the 2026 Formula 1 season with a commanding victory at the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, Melbourne, leading a one-two finish for Mercedes ahead of team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

The result marked a historic milestone for the Brackley-based team. It was Mercedes’ first one-two finish without Lewis Hamilton in the team since 1955. Russell controlled the race across 58 laps and crossed the line just under three seconds ahead of Antonelli.

Behind the Mercedes pair, the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Hamilton finished third and fourth after the Italian team’s strategic choices failed to capitalise on two Virtual Safety Car periods early in the race.

Further back, McLaren driver Lando Norris secured fifth place while holding off reigning world champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing, who recovered impressively from 20th on the grid to finish sixth.

Dramatic Start at Albert Park

The race at Albert Park immediately produced drama when the lights went out. Leclerc launched strongly from fourth position and swept into the lead exiting Turn 1.

Antonelli, however, lost several positions at the start, leaving Russell to battle Ferrari alone at the front in the opening laps. Hamilton also briefly entered the fight for the lead after making an aggressive launch from the midfield.

Across the first ten laps, Russell and Leclerc engaged in an intense strategic battle, frequently exchanging positions as both drivers deployed their electrical power and overtaking modes under the new Formula 1 power unit regulations.

At one stage Russell locked up heavily into Turn 1, causing a flat spot on his front-left tyre and briefly handing Ferrari an opportunity to extend their advantage.

Virtual Safety Car Shifts the Race

The complexion of the race changed when the first Virtual Safety Car was triggered after Isack Hadjar suffered a technical failure and stopped on track.

Mercedes immediately brought both Russell and Antonelli into the pits, switching from medium tyres to hard compounds.

Ferrari chose a different strategy, leaving Leclerc and Hamilton out on track. While this briefly placed the Scuderia in a one-two position, the decision ultimately proved costly.

The situation grew more complicated when a second VSC was triggered after Valtteri Bottas parked his Cadillac near the pit lane entry. During that phase race control temporarily closed the pit lane.

When the pit lane reopened, Ferrari finally made their stops. By then, however, the strategic advantage had already shifted decisively to Mercedes.

Incidents Shape the Race

Several incidents influenced the race weekend even before the start.

Home driver Oscar Piastri was unable to start the race after crashing on the reconnaissance lap while heading to the grid at Turn 4.

Meanwhile Audi driver Nico Hulkenberg also failed to take the start after a technical problem with his car on the grid.

Later in the race, both Aston Martin drivers retired, with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll exiting the race during the closing stages.

Russell Secures Comfortable Victory

With around 14 laps remaining, Russell held a margin of roughly 16 seconds over Leclerc in third place. Mercedes confirmed via team radio that the race would be completed on a one-stop strategy.

From that point, Russell and Antonelli managed the gap comfortably, finishing well clear of the Ferrari drivers.

The victory places Russell at the top of the early 2026 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship standings, giving Mercedes a strong start to the season as the championship prepares to move on to the next round.
