George Russell Nears Engine Penalty After 2026 Hungarian F1 Issue

George Russell is approaching the risk of an engine penalty after a water leak at the end of qualifying for the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix forced Mercedes to install his fourth power unit of the season.

Russell originally completed qualifying in seventh before stopping on track while returning to the pits at the end of Q3. Mercedes subsequently identified a loss of water pressure and a leak believed to have developed after the car rode over a kerb at Turn 4.

“We lost water pressure and I had a water leak. When I stopped on track, the car was leaking a load of water,” Russell said. “We don’t know where it has come from. Fingers crossed it doesn’t affect anything for tomorrow.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff described Russell as unlucky during an underwhelming session for the team. He said the leak appeared when the car travelled over a kerb, although further inspection was required to establish the full extent of the damage.

Mercedes then elected to replace Russell’s power unit as a precaution. The new engine is the fourth of four permitted during the 2026 season, meaning the change does not result in a grid penalty for the race at the Hungaroring.

However, the decision uses the remainder of Russell’s penalty-free engine allocation. If he requires a fifth internal combustion engine later in the campaign, the change will automatically trigger a grid drop.

Team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli is in a similar position because both Mercedes drivers have now reached their fourth power units. That increases the possibility of an engine penalty after the summer break if reliability becomes an issue again.

The technical problem added to a difficult weekend for Russell, who was unable to match McLaren and Ferrari’s qualifying pace. He believes Mercedes remained weak over one lap, although its earlier practice data suggested stronger long-run performance.

“We were probably even further behind yesterday, but we had the strongest race pace, which tends to say it is not a car problem but a tyre problem,” Russell said.

Mercedes faced a compromise between optimising the car for qualifying and preserving its race performance. Russell admitted the team could have produced a faster single-lap set-up, but doing so risked reducing pace and consistency over longer stints.

“We probably know we could make the car faster in qualifying trim at the expense of race performance. Time will tell tomorrow if we struck the right balance,” he said.

Russell will start sixth after penalties for Lewis Hamilton and Antonelli reshaped the grid. However, the Hungaroring’s limited overtaking opportunities mean that position still presents a significant challenge in his pursuit of a strong result.

With Russell 50 points behind Antonelli in the drivers’ championship, the 2026 Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix represents an important opportunity to reduce the deficit before the summer break. Mercedes also needs a trouble-free race after the water leak consumed the final unit in Russell’s penalty-free engine allocation.
