George Russell Mystified By Lack Of Pace At F1 US GP 2026

George Russell is desperately searching for answers after enduring a severely underwhelming weekend regarding raw speed at the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in Austin. The British driver ultimately crossed the finish line in a disappointing eighth place, while his teammate at Mercedes, Kimi Antonelli, put on a masterclass display by dominating the race from pole position.

The weekend at COTA started going sideways early on for Russell, who lined up sixth on the grid before slipping down the order. Compounding his difficult Sunday afternoon, he was handed a five-second time penalty for gaining a lasting advantage by running off the track on the opening lap. The incident occurred as he fiercely defended his position against Oscar Piastri heading into Turn 12, forcing him off the tarmac before rejoining ahead of the McLaren.

Ultimately, that penalty altered very little in terms of his final race result, as without it he would have theoretically only gained one position to finish seventh. When pressed by reporters regarding the root cause of his struggles inside the cockpit, the Mercedes driver was brutally honest about his lack of performance. He admitted that the fundamental issue simply boils down to not being quick enough throughout the stints.

This latest setback arrived despite the team introducing an upgraded package to the W17 machine, which Russell believes suffers from an extremely narrow set-up window. This erratic behavior has plagued his form ever since the updates debuted in Malaysia. Back then, Antonelli secured a strong runner-up finish behind dominant winner Max Verstappen, whereas Russell suffered a heartbreaking late power unit failure while running firmly inside the podium places.

With the championship battle rapidly drawing to a close, Antonelli now stands on the brink of clinching the world title in Mexico next weekend. Meanwhile, Mercedes remains fully focused on wrapping up the constructors' championship comfortably ahead of challengers from Ferrari as the season approaches its final stages.
