George Russell firmly believes that Red Bull has established itself as the new benchmark in Formula 1, following a stellar run of form by Max Verstappen across the recent Asian triple-header. Verstappen secured a close second place behind Russell in Baku before commanding dominant victories in both Malaysia and Singapore.
This competitive shift is directly tied to major technical updates introduced during recent weeks, with Red Bull unleashing a final significant package for the RB22 in Baku that immediately delivered a massive performance step forward. Meanwhile, the reality inside the Mercedes garage has proven considerably more complicated after debuting their long-awaited W17 upgrade package at the notoriously abrasive Sepang International Circuit.
During the Singapore Grand Prix weekend, Mercedes ran a split specification strategy utilizing the old spec with Russell and the new spec with Kimi Antonelli to gather vital comparative data. Preliminary findings indicate that while the upgrade theoretically offers greater potential, the exact operating window required to unlock that raw speed remains exceptionally narrow.

"The numbers say it's performing as we expect, but obviously the lap times haven't been that great, so we need to try and understand how to make that work," Russell stated after the race. Despite losing valuable ground due to an ill-timed Virtual Safety Car during his recovery drive, the British driver insisted that his primary concern rests entirely on closing the performance gap to Milton Keynes.
Adding crucial context to his teammate's assessment, rookie sensation Kimi Antonelli noted that Mercedes' current deficit stems partly from their ongoing learning curve with the new parts. "I think it is probably mostly us not extracting the maximum out of the new package, alongside Red Bull making an incredible step forward," Antonelli explained.
