Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell has outlined several critical areas he must improve as he targets his first Formula 1 drivers’ championship with Mercedes in the 2026 season.

The British driver opened the campaign with victory in Australia, but momentum shifted to team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who secured back-to-back wins in China and Japan to take the lead in the standings. Despite Mercedes’ dominant overall pace, one notable weakness has been poor race starts.

The team has yet to lead a race at the first corner despite securing three pole positions, highlighting an operational gap in converting qualifying performance into early race control. Russell acknowledged this as a key area requiring immediate attention.

"I have things that I also need to improve around the race start, because that's clearly a very important factor," Russell said.

Russell admitted to procedural errors that impacted his race execution in Japan, including losing position to Lewis Hamilton and later encountering issues involving Charles Leclerc. He stressed that refining these details could significantly alter race outcomes.

"I made some procedural errors that led to me being overtaken by Lewis in Japan and then the problem later in the race with Leclerc. If I iron out these things, we're in a very different situation."

Looking ahead to the Miami Grand Prix, Russell dismissed concerns regarding Antonelli’s strong performance at the venue last year, reiterating that the championship battle is defined by consistency across the full calendar.

"Not at all. That was his strongest track last year, but I had more than 20 other tracks that were very strong for me."

"A championship is won over the whole season, and as long as I maximise my points by the end, what happens race by race, no one remembers."

Russell emphasised a consistency-driven approach as central to his title ambitions, focusing on extracting maximum results under all conditions rather than reacting to individual performances.

"Consistency, good results on the bad days, victories on the good days—that remains my goal every single weekend. I’m not thinking about Kimi or the championship; I’m focused on myself."

With Mercedes maintaining early-season dominance and Russell identifying clear operational improvements, his title campaign rests on refining execution in key phases such as starts and restarts. These elements are expected to play a decisive role as the season progresses into its next phase, beginning in Miami.
