George Russell Crashes Out of Lead in Wet 2026 Singapore F1 Sprint

George Russell suffered a dramatic crash while leading the wet sprint race at the Singapore Grand Prix on lap two, triggering an immediate safety car intervention. The Mercedes driver had made a brilliant start on the damp track, diving down the inside at Turn 1 to snatch the lead away from pole-sitter Max Verstappen amidst sudden heavy downpours.

However, the British driver's tenure at the front proved extremely short-lived as treacherous track conditions caught him out in the final corner. Telemetry and visual evidence suggested he lost total rear control after running across the slippery painted white line on the circuit surface during the second lap.

The high-speed impact sent his car hurtling directly into the inside pitwall, crossing the track sideways in a heart-stopping moment before coming to rest on the outer edge of the start-finish straight. He was exceptionally fortunate not to be collected by oncoming traffic navigating the chaotic wet conditions behind him.

Race control immediately deployed the safety car to neutralise the chaotic field while marshals cleared the stricken machine from the racing line. This handed the lead back to Verstappen, who held off a surging Lewis Hamilton—who gained multiple positions from sixth on the grid—followed closely by Charles Leclerc.

Further down the order, the chaotic conditions claimed more victims as Lance Stroll collided with Sergio Perez at Turn 4, eliminating both from contention. Meanwhile, technical gremlins struck Isack Hadjar's power unit, forcing him out alongside Franco Colapinto, while Arvid Lindblad spun down to the very back of the remaining field.
