George Russell Blames Extra Fuel Strategy for Narrow Mexican GP Pole Miss

George Russell believes that carrying an extra lap of fuel ultimately cost him a potential pole position at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, missing out on the top spot by a mere 0.009 seconds during a nail-biting qualifying session in Mexico City.

The Mercedes charger secured a front-row start alongside his former team-mate, who now races in red for Ferrari, with the Scuderia's leading qualifier lining up right behind them in third place. The minuscule margin highlights just how intense the battle at the sharp end of the grid has become.

Reflecting on his final Q3 run during the post-qualifying media conference, Russell pointed out the strategic divergence between his garage and his main rivals regarding tyre preparation laps. "I saw Lewis and Charles and Max as well. They weren't doing the prep lap. We were doing prep laps, just getting the temperature of the tyre. It's quite challenging," Russell explained.

The British driver admitted that his personal instinct was to push straight away on the initial tour without an extra warm-up rotation, but the engineering crew opted for a conservative approach to manage Pirelli's operating windows. That fractional weight penalty proved more costly than the microscopic gap to pole.

"My gut told me we could do it on lap one without the preparation, but the team wanted to do the prep, so we ended up carrying the fuel for an extra lap. It's such a small number, but it's bigger than the gap to pole," he added, noting the retrospective frustration of what could have been.

Despite the strategic regret, Russell expressed genuine gratitude for salvaging a front-row grid slot after a complicated weekend where hitting consistent single-lap pace proved elusive. Understanding why extracting maximum performance has fluctuated compared to previous campaigns remains a key focus for the Brackley squad.

With the championship battle nearing its climax, holding onto second place in the drivers' standings remains a high-stakes priority under intense pressure from trailing rivals as the 2026 season enters its final stretch.
