George Russell admitted he still lacks complete confidence in consistently extracting the maximum performance from his Mercedes, despite producing a dominant display to win the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix.
Russell converted pole position into victory after leading 57 of the 71 laps at the Red Bull Ring. The result marked the seventh Formula 1 victory of his career and his first since the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. It also reduced the championship deficit to team-mate Kimi Antonelli to 40 points.
Consistency Remains the Biggest Challenge
Although the final result appeared convincing, Russell revealed he still struggles to consistently align the car, setup and tyre performance throughout a race weekend. He believes that inconsistency remains the biggest obstacle to unlocking Mercedes' full potential.

"I have a lot of confidence in myself, knowing I can do it. I have less confidence in getting everything aligned with the car, the setup and the tyres because it's been so up and down," Russell explained.
His comments underline one of Mercedes' biggest challenges during the 2026 campaign. Despite winning in Austria, Russell admitted he still cannot fully explain why his pace can fluctuate dramatically from one session to another.
A Dramatic Turnaround Against Antonelli
Antonelli looked to be the quicker Mercedes driver for much of the weekend. Russell revealed he had been as much as six tenths slower than the Italian before completely reversing the situation in Q3 by taking pole position with a two-tenth advantage.
"Even this weekend I was six tenths behind Kimi, then in Q3 I was two tenths ahead. Honestly, I don't have a major answer for that," Russell said.
He added that whenever he produced his strongest laps, the W17 felt much closer to last year's car, allowing him to drive with the confidence and consistency he enjoyed throughout much of the previous season.
A Difficult Period Mentally
Russell also described the last few months as one of the most demanding phases of his Formula 1 career. Besides several disappointing races, he has also faced the challenge of competing against Antonelli, who has consistently delivered impressive performances throughout the season.
"It's been a tough couple of months with some really tricky races. Sometimes it felt like everything was going against me, while I've also got an incredible team-mate who keeps delivering spectacular performances," he said.
According to Russell, recovering from those setbacks required considerable resilience before the momentum finally began to shift at the Canadian and Austrian Grands Prix.
A Win That Restores Momentum
Back-to-back pole positions and victory in Austria represent an important turning point for Russell, but he insists there is still work to do before he can consistently maximise the Mercedes package regardless of circuit or conditions.
For Russell, success at the Red Bull Ring does not mean every issue has been solved. Instead, it provides confirmation that both he and Mercedes are moving back in the right direction ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
