George Russell Admits Costly Error in Singapore GP 2026

Mercedes Formula 1 driver George Russell has openly conceded that his crash during the Singapore Grand Prix sprint race was entirely his own fault. The high-speed accident on the wet Marina Bay circuit not only robbed him of a potential victory but also severely compromised his technical performance during the subsequent main qualifying session.

Starting from the front row on a treacherous wet track, the British driver made a blistering getaway to snatch the lead away from polesitter Max Verstappen. However, disaster struck moments later when he ran slightly wide on the exit of the final corner, causing the rear end to snap violently and sending his Silver Arrow spinning directly into the barrier.

Despite showing phenomenal pace to secure second on the grid during sprint qualifying earlier, George Russell could only manage sixth place in the main qualifying hour. He attributes this drop in competitiveness to the frantic rebuilding job required by his mechanics to patch up his damaged chassis ahead of the evening session.

"Obviously a very bad day all in all, and stemming from my own mistake," George Russell commented when assessing his difficult Saturday performance. "The car didn't feel quite the same. I was struggling with the rear end and then I was overheating the tyres and it was just a bit of a downward spiral."

This assessment was backed by Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, who admitted that time constraints during the rapid chassis turnaround likely affected the car's aerodynamic platform. "With George, the car was only finished at the very last minute," Toto Wolff told broadcasters. "The floor is probably not quite as it should be."

Looking ahead to the main Grand Prix, George Russell faces an uphill battle from the back of the grid due to a power unit penalty carrying over from his previous mechanical failure.
