Gasly Stumped by Sudden Pace Loss in Madrid Qualifying
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Lack of grip ended Gasly’s Q2 hopes after a sideways moment during qualifying

Pierre Gasly was left searching for answers after a dramatic drop in performance ended his qualifying session in Q2 at the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix. The Alpine driver had shown promising pace throughout practice, raising hopes of a top-ten fight at the Madring, but ultimately qualified 14th.

"Q1 was nowhere already. Q2 was nowhere," Gasly said. "I mean, at the moment, absolutely no idea how the car changed that much from the whole weekend. I was super comfortable in the car, very happy with the balance. And what happened in quali, I've never felt that."

He insisted the issue went beyond a typical setup or track temperature problem. "We'll see, but yeah, something along these lines, because the shift of balance and grip, and we see drop the fuel, etc. It's the second half of the start. So, just something doesn't quite add up. And yeah, I look at the gaps, etc. It's just like, from the start of the lap to the end, I'm spending the whole lap turning the opposite side. So, it doesn't make sense."

Gasly was blunt about his prospects for Sunday: "Honestly, with this car tomorrow, I'm not going anywhere. So, I need to take some chances tonight." His words reveal the urgency for Alpine to find a fix before the race.

He also noted that conditions had generally improved through the weekend, and observed that lower formulae appeared to benefit from the same trend. However, he cautioned that the Madring's high-speed sections and banking could still shape the race.

Asked whether he expected a hectic Grand Prix, he said: "I don't know. I just want to get back in the office and get the answers I need." That response captures both his frustration and determination to uncover the root cause.

With such a disappointing performance, Gasly and Alpine must dig deep. They have not only lost a better grid position but also the confidence they had built. The race will be a tough test, especially if the grip and balance issues persist. Fans will hope for a turnaround, but as Gasly admitted, with a car that's not competitive, his chances are slim.
