The remarkable journey within the motorsport industry is highlighted in the 91st episode of the Grassroots Racing podcast hosted by Darren Smith and Garry O’Brien. This time, Kaye Callander shares her key experiences and duties inside the race control tower, detailing her progression from the grassroots level to major leadership roles.
Callander’s entry into the racing world was entirely unexpected, having no prior family ties or affiliation with the sport until a colleague invited her to a race meeting at Amaroo Park back in 1993. That initial visit instantly ignited a lifelong passion for the motorsport environment.
It was not merely the speed of the cars that captured her attention, but rather the people she met and the unique atmosphere of the paddock. She soon became a regular fixture at state-level race meetings, beginning her official duties as a flag marshal before demonstrating the natural ability that earned her rapid promotions.
Her dedication led her to sector marshal duties and eventually communications within race control, paving the way for her involvement in high-profile events including IndyCar races on the Gold Coast and the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
Breaking down barriers across multiple disciplines, Callander eventually advanced to serve as Clerk of Course for the Repco Supercars Championship and Motorsport Australia events, culminating in her role as Race Director for the inaugural Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia season.
