Adrien Fourmaux is once again in the spotlight ahead of the WRC season finale in Sardinia. The Frenchman has repeatedly shown front-running pace but has yet to convert it into a coveted Rally1 victory.
Last season, Fourmaux was firmly in the fight at the front in Sardinia. Unfortunately, misfortune struck: a puncture on the morning of the second day and a subsequent off-road incident dropped him down the order. “Sardinia is an event where I have always been fast, but for different reasons I’ve never managed to come away with the result I felt was possible,” he said.
This year, he is determined to change that. “The plan is to change that this year,” the Hyundai driver stated. He also highlighted the rally’s move from early summer to October. “There is probably a greater chance of rain, although we have also seen rain here in June. If it stays dry, I expect the conditions to be quite similar to what we know,” he added.
Sardinia’s rocky gravel roads offer no respite. The risk of punctures is ever-present. For this season finale, the FIA, motorsport’s governing body, has allowed additional tyre-change opportunities. “This is a very demanding rally for both the cars and the crews,” Fourmaux said.
The era of the current Rally1 cars, the fastest in history, will come to an end in Sardinia. “It will also be a special event as the final round of the season and the last time we compete with this generation of Rally1 cars. We want to finish the season in the strongest possible way and fight for a good result,” he concluded.
The WRC season finale begins in Sardinia on Friday. This season’s world championship will be decided after 17 stages and 307 kilometres. Toyota drivers Elfyn Evans, Sami Pajari, and Oliver Solberg remain in contention.
