Ford has injected an additional $5,000 into the Top Dog Challenge, an initiative by Supercars drivers Brodie Kostecki and Will Brown to support young Australian drivers. The challenge originally offered a $20,000 prize for the winning junior driver.
Promoted via their Lucky Dogs podcast, the Top Dog Challenge sees all full-time Supercars drivers nominate a young driver who would receive the cash prize if they win. Currently, four drivers remain in the challenge: Kai Allen, Will Brown, Anton De Pasquale, and Chaz Mostert.
Mostert and Allen will go head-to-head at the Bathurst 1000, as will Brown and De Pasquale. The best performer from each bracket will battle for the prize on the Gold Coast. Should either Brown or Allen prevail, the prize pool will swell to $25,000 thanks to Ford's additional $5,000 pledge.
Kostecki and Brown have used Ford's pledge to pressure General Motors and Toyota to join in. "If it's not a Ford driver, that's $5,000 that we've missed," said Brown in a social media clip. "Ford said Chevy and Toyota can cough up. It's really cool for Ford to step in and offer that support. If myself or Kai do get through and win the Top Dog Challenge we'll be giving away not $20,000, but $25,000 to one of the young juniors, that will be really exciting."
Allen's junior driver pick is karter Levi Doessel while Brown has nominated GR Scholarship driver Harry Bresneshan. Those vying for what is currently the $20,000 prize pool are GR Cup driver Jack Szewczuk (De Pasquale) and Kiwi 86 driver Chris White (Mostert).
This initiative is not just about the money; it's about providing opportunities for young Australian talent to develop. With support from manufacturers like Ford, it is hoped that more young drivers will be motivated to pursue a career in motorsport.
The Top Dog Challenge also adds a new dimension to the rivalry among Supercars drivers, who usually compete on track, now competing to support the next generation. The competition will culminate on the Gold Coast, where the winner will be decided.
